I’ve often been asked why I became a teacher. The answer is easy. I love kids! But if anyone was to ask what keeps me going, I would have to say, there are three simple beliefs that fuel my tank each day. I believe all children are special and precious, all children can learn and teachers make the difference.
First, I believe all children are special and precious. I believe all children have unique talents and interests, personalities and preferences. Some children are good at one thing but not in another. Some children like this but don’t like that. Some children are silly, some are serious, and some are neither. And that’s ok because that’s what makes them who they are. As an educator, I want to value these qualities in each student and help the individuals express and cultivate their uniqueness. I believe teachers have the opportunities to nurture and encourage students to love who they are and be the best they can be.
Next, I believe all children can learn. Children learn in different ways and at different rates, but all children can learn. They go through different stages of development at different times, which means some may be ready and some maybe not. But, all children can learn. Some students may require more support than others and for some, we might just have to wait awhile. But I believe all children can learn. The progress some students make may not look like much. However, progress is progress, and learning is learning, no matter how great or small. Therefore, I believe whatever the growth may be, we need to celebrate and acknowledge it. In a world that is driven by standards, I believe it is important not to just celebrate the academic achievements, but to celebrate all achievements and all kinds of progress. Growth in maturity, character and especially effort, often get overlooked. We need to remember these things are part of learning too. Progress is progress whether you can measure with the standards or not. As well I want to remember that the process the students go through in learning, is just as important as the accomplishment they achieve. I believe every child deserves recognition for every step they take in the journey to gain knowledge and wisdom.
Finally, I believe the greatest impact on students are the teachers. I believe teachers make the difference when it comes to student learning. We may have the most amazing resources and curriculum, and these things are important. However, the teachers are the ones that make learning fun and exciting for students. Teachers are the ones who motivate and inspire students to learn. I believe when teachers create a warm safe classroom environment for students to make mistakes and learn from them, students will learn and grow. As well, I believe cultivating relationships with students is a crucial aspect of student learning. Knowing and understanding each student is what makes the difference. I believe teachers have the power to make the difference everyday.
So, each day I teach I try to remember these things. I cherish every moment, hoping I make a difference in the children's lives and inspire learning, while always remembering, it is a privilege and a blessing to work with such precioius little people. This is why I teach!
